Most , if not all of us, have walked by a pond on a hot summer day, have been moved by the beauty, and yet felt the tension in the air. I was inspired in this work by an earlier painting done when I was just leaning into a contemporary approach. It was called Cattails and Pond. As I looked at the notion of "Swamp", I was aware that there is much more than what meets the eye, not only in the scene as nature presents it, but in the painting as well.
At the time I wrote this poem which I present here slightly amended.
Miasma: More Than Swamp Gas
Love is a field that holds the precious Peace is an equanimity that rests in wisdom Both arise from an understanding of the give and take in life
Cat tails stand as sentinels to the magic The pond shimmers on a hot summer day Light dances from shade to shade, hue to hue The air is tense with an expectation A hawk screeches, a beaver tail slaps, a hornet buzzes the ear
Behind the shimmer, life and death bug eats bug, fish eats fish, bird eats bird Rotting plants
Yet such life, such beauty A kaleidoscope of dancing miasmic waves Harmony, Balance Love , Peace Witness Ethereal Wisdom
